Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku II is a 2002 action RPG for the Game Boy Advance from Webfoot Technologies. It follows the Android and Cell sagas of the anime: you explore the world from above, fight enemies in real time and level up as Gohan, Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo and Trunks. If you own the game, Nagori lets you play it on iPhone and iPad.
What you need
- An iPhone or iPad with iOS 17.6 or later.
- Nagori from the App Store. Your first game is free.
- Your copy of The Legacy of Goku II as a
.gbafile, or a.zipor.rarcontaining it.
No BIOS file is needed.
How to play The Legacy of Goku II on iPhone
- Install Nagori from the App Store.
- Copy your Legacy of Goku II
.gbafile to the Files app, in iCloud Drive or On My iPhone. - Open Nagori, tap + and select the file. If the game is in a
.zipor.rar, add the archive as it is and Nagori unpacks it. - Find the game on the GBA shelf with its box art and press Play.
Controls
The Standard touch layout puts the D-pad under your left thumb and the A and B buttons under your right, with L and R along the top. If you use the shoulder buttons a lot and reaching them pulls your thumbs off the D-pad and A, open Edit Layout in the pause menu and drag L and R lower, or make them bigger.
A controller makes the long play sessions more comfortable. Bluetooth controllers that iOS supports, including DualSense, DualShock 4 and Xbox controllers, work with Nagori. A and B sit on the face buttons, L and R on the shoulder buttons, and the left stick works as the D-pad too. Press the left stick to open the pause menu.
Fast Forward for leveling
An action RPG means walking back and forth between areas and fighting the same enemies to gain levels before a hard boss. Fast Forward runs the game at twice the speed and takes the grind down to half the time. Assign it to a controller button in the pause menu, or add the ×2 button to My Layout to use it with touch controls. Switch back to normal speed for the boss fights.
Saves
Saves made in the game itself are kept automatically, just as on the cartridge. Nagori adds more:
- Quit any time. Leave the app mid-fight and Continue puts you back exactly where you were.
- Save states. Pause and choose Save before a boss. If the fight goes badly, Load and try again, or go back and gain a few more levels first. Nagori keeps your last four saves per game.
- iCloud. Save to iCloud and Load from iCloud move your progress between your iPhone and iPad.
Cheats
Nagori accepts GameShark and Action Replay codes for each game. Pause, choose Cheats and add the codes you have; each one gets its own switch, so you can turn it off again without deleting it. Make a save state before you try a new code, in case it does something you didn’t expect.
Best settings
- Picture Smoothing softens the pixels. Turn it off for sharp, raw pixels like on the Game Boy Advance screen.
- Full Screen stretches the picture to fill the display. Leave it off to keep the GBA’s 3:2 shape; in Edit Layout you can move the controls into the black bars on the sides so they don’t cover the map.
- Screen Effects → CRT Screen adds scanlines and a shadow mask, closer to how the anime looked on an old tube TV.
