Crash Team Racing was Naughty Dog’s last Crash game for the PlayStation, and it put the whole cast into go-karts: Crash, Coco, Cortex and the rest. Races mix item crates, Wumpa fruit and powerslide boosts, and the Adventure Mode pits the racers against Nitros Oxide, an alien who wants to turn the Earth into a parking lot. If you own the game, Nagori lets you play it on iPhone and iPad.

What you need

  • An iPhone or iPad with iOS 17.6 or later.
  • Nagori from the App Store. Your first game is free.
  • A disc image of your copy of Crash Team Racing: .chd, .cue + .bin, .pbp, .iso or .img, or a .zip or .rar containing it. The game fits on a single disc.
  • For two-player races, two Bluetooth controllers.

No BIOS file is needed.

How to play Crash Team Racing on iPhone

  1. Install Nagori from the App Store.
  2. Copy your Crash Team Racing disc image to the Files app, in iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.
  3. Open Nagori, tap + and select the file. For a .cue image, select the .cue together with all of its .bin files, or add the archive they came in.
  4. Find Crash Team Racing on the PS1 shelf with its box art and press Play.

Controls

Crash Team Racing works with both the D-pad and the analog stick. The Standard touch layout steers with the D-pad. If you prefer a stick, pause, open Settings and switch Touch Layout to D-Pad + Stick or DualShock.

The shoulder buttons matter more here than in most PS1 games: hops, powerslides and the boosts you earn from a well-timed slide all depend on them. On the touch layouts they sit in the top corners of the screen. Open Edit Layout in the pause menu and drag them closer to where your thumbs rest, or make them bigger, so you can slide without reaching.

With a controller, every button sits where it did on the PlayStation pad, and you can steer with the left stick. Rumble comes through the controller, or through your iPhone with iPhone Vibration in Settings. Press the left stick to open the pause menu.

Two players

On the console, Crash Team Racing took up to four players with a Multitap adapter. Nagori supports two controllers, so you can race a friend in split screen or meet in the Battle mode arenas, but three- and four-player games aren’t available. Connect both controllers before you pick a mode. The touch controls hide while a controller is connected, so each player needs one.

Saves

Crash Team Racing keeps your Adventure Mode progress on a memory card. In Nagori, each game has its own memory card, written every few seconds, so those saves work as they did on the console. On top of that:

  • Quit any time. Leave mid-race and Continue puts you back on the same lap.
  • Save states. Pause and choose Save on the starting grid of a boss race, a Relic Race against the clock, or a CTR Challenge, where you have to collect the letters C, T and R and still win. If the race goes wrong, Load and try again. Nagori keeps your last four saves per game.

Best settings

  • Quality: High, the default, renders the tracks and karts at twice the original resolution.
  • Precise Geometry, in Advanced Settings, steadies the slight wobble of PS1 polygons, which is easy to spot on the track at speed.
  • Screen Effects → CRT Screen adds scanlines if you want the game to look like it did on a 1990s TV.

Nagori runs each disc at the speed it ran on the console: 60 Hz for American and Japanese releases, 50 Hz for European (PAL) ones.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play Crash Team Racing on iPhone?

Yes. Add a disc image of your own copy of Crash Team Racing to Nagori, a PS1 emulator from the App Store, and it plays on iPhone and iPad with touch controls or a controller.

Is Crash Team Racing free on iPhone?

Nagori doesn't include or sell games, so you need your own copy. The app itself lets you add your first game for free.

Can two people play Crash Team Racing on one iPhone?

Yes. Connect two Bluetooth controllers to race or battle in split screen. Nagori supports two players, so the three- and four-player games that needed a Multitap on the console aren't available.

Can I play Crash Team Racing with a controller on iPhone?

Yes. Bluetooth controllers that iOS supports, including DualSense, DualShock 4 and Xbox controllers, work with Nagori. You can steer with the D-pad or the left stick, and the touch controls hide as soon as a controller connects.

Do I need a BIOS to play Crash Team Racing on iPhone?

No. Nagori starts PS1 games without a BIOS file.
