Polyphony Digital’s 1999 sequel is a driving simulator split across two discs. Arcade Mode gets you racing in seconds, alone or against a friend. Simulation Mode is the long game: earn licenses, buy and tune cars, and win prize money to buy faster ones. If you own the game, Nagori lets you play both discs on iPhone and iPad.

What you need

  • An iPhone or iPad with iOS 17.6 or later.
  • Nagori from the App Store. Your first game is free.
  • Disc images of both Gran Turismo 2 discs from your copy: .chd, .cue + .bin, .pbp, .iso or .img, or a .zip or .rar containing them. Disc 1 holds Arcade Mode, Disc 2 holds Simulation Mode.

No BIOS file is needed.

How to play Gran Turismo 2 on iPhone

  1. Install Nagori from the App Store.
  2. Copy both disc images to the Files app, in iCloud Drive or On My iPhone. Check that the file names include (Disc 1) and (Disc 2).
  3. Open Nagori, tap + and select both discs. For .cue images, select each .cue together with its .bin files, or add the archive they came in.
  4. Find Gran Turismo 2 on the PS1 shelf with its box art and press Play.

Two discs: Arcade and Simulation

Gran Turismo 2 keeps its two modes on separate discs. Nagori turns them into a single game:

  • Name the files by disc number, for example Gran Turismo 2 (Disc 1).chd for Arcade and Gran Turismo 2 (Disc 2).chd for Simulation. Nagori then puts one game on the shelf instead of two. If your files don’t have the disc number in their names, rename them before you add them.
  • Switch discs from the pause menu. Choose Change Disc. The row shows which disc is in, for example Disc 1 of 2.
  • Both discs share one memory card. That matters here: a Gran Turismo 2 save holds your Arcade Mode, Simulation Mode and option settings together, and Arcade Mode can race the cars from your Simulation Mode garage.

Controls

Gran Turismo 2 plays on the D-pad, but it was built for the DualShock: the left stick gives you finer steering than the D-pad’s full left or right.

  • On touch, pause and pick a layout with a stick under Settings → Touch Layout. Stick Focus puts a large stick under your left thumb, while accelerate and brake stay on the face buttons on the right.
  • Edit Layout, in the same place, lets you make the accelerator and brake bigger or drag them to where your right thumb rests.
  • With a controller, steer with the left stick and find every button where it was on the PlayStation pad. Press the left stick to open the pause menu.
  • Rumble comes through your controller, or through your iPhone with iPhone Vibration turned on. The game’s own Options menu switches vibration on or off and lets you change the button layout.

For 2 Player Battle, connect two controllers and pick the mode in Arcade Mode. The screen splits in two, as on the console. Nagori supports two controllers, which is all this mode needs.

Saves

Gran Turismo 2 saves when you choose Save Game in its menus. One save takes 4 of the memory card’s 15 blocks, and replays need at least 3 more. Nagori makes this easier:

  • A memory card of its own. Every game in Nagori gets its own memory card, so Gran Turismo 2 never runs out of space because of other games. The game finds the save on that card and loads it when it starts, as it did with a card in slot 1 on the console.
  • Quit mid-race. Endurance races run long. Leave the app and Continue puts you back exactly where you were, on the same lap.
  • Save states. Pause and choose Save before a race you really want to win, and Load if it goes wrong. Nagori keeps your last four saves per game.

Keep using Save Game as well: that save holds your cars, money and licenses, and it’s the one Arcade Mode reads your garage from.

Best settings

  • Quality: High, the default, renders the game’s 3D at twice the original resolution, so cars and the track ahead look sharper.
  • Precise Geometry, in Advanced Settings, steadies the slight wobble of PS1 polygons.
  • Screen Effects → CRT Screen adds scanlines if you want the game to look like it did on a 1990s TV.

Nagori runs every copy at its original speed. European (PAL) discs run at 50 Hz, a little slower than the 60 Hz American and Japanese versions, just as they did on the console.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play Gran Turismo 2 on iPhone?

Yes. Add disc images of your own copy of Gran Turismo 2 to Nagori, a PS1 emulator from the App Store, and it plays on iPhone and iPad with touch controls or a controller.

Is Gran Turismo 2 free on iPhone?

Nagori doesn't include or sell games, so you need your own copy. The app itself lets you add your first game for free.

How do I switch between the Arcade and Simulation discs?

Name the two files with (Disc 1) and (Disc 2) so Nagori groups them into one game, then choose Change Disc in the pause menu. Disc 1 holds Arcade Mode and Disc 2 holds Simulation Mode.

Can I steer with an analog stick in Gran Turismo 2?

Yes. The game supports analog steering. Pick a touch layout with a stick, such as Stick Focus, or use the left stick of a controller.

Can two players race Gran Turismo 2 on one iPhone?

Yes. Connect two controllers and choose 2 Player Battle in Arcade Mode for a split-screen race, just like on the console.

Do I need a BIOS to play Gran Turismo 2 on iPhone?

No. Nagori starts PS1 games without a BIOS file.
