Mortal Kombat Trilogy puts the fighters, stages and moves of the first three Mortal Kombat games and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on one disc, bringing back Johnny Cage and Baraka, who were missing from Mortal Kombat 3. Released on the PlayStation in 1996, it adds the Aggressor bar, which fills as you fight and briefly makes your fighter faster and stronger, and Brutalities, a new finishing move. If you own the game, Nagori lets you play it on iPhone and iPad.

What you need

  • An iPhone or iPad with iOS 17.6 or later.
  • Nagori from the App Store. Your first game is free.
  • A disc image of your copy of Mortal Kombat Trilogy: .chd, .cue + .bin, .pbp, .iso or .img, or a .zip or .rar containing it. The game fits on a single disc.
  • For two-player fights, two Bluetooth controllers.

No BIOS file is needed.

How to play Mortal Kombat Trilogy on iPhone

  1. Install Nagori from the App Store.
  2. Copy your Mortal Kombat Trilogy disc image to the Files app, in iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.
  3. Open Nagori, tap + and select the file. The disc keeps its music on separate audio tracks, so a .cue image can come with dozens of .bin files. Select the .cue together with all of them, or add the archive they came in.
  4. Find Mortal Kombat Trilogy on the PS1 shelf with its box art and press Play.

Controls

In Mortal Kombat, Block is a button of its own, not a step back. High and low punch, high and low kick, Block and Run make six buttons, more than the four face buttons, so some sit on the shoulders. The game predates the DualShock and only uses the D-pad, so pick the Standard touch layout.

Its shoulder buttons sit in the top corners. Open Edit Layout in the pause menu and drag them next to the face buttons, so all six actions are under your right thumb.

With a controller, every button sits where it did on the PlayStation pad, and the left stick works as the D-pad too. Press the left stick to open the pause menu.

Two players: versus, teams and tournaments

Connect two controllers for one-on-one fights, 2-on-2 team battles or a tournament bracket for up to eight fighters. The touch controls hide while a controller is connected, so each player needs one.

Kombat Kodes work too: before a two-player fight, each player changes three of the six symbols on the VS screen with their buttons. The right code switches on a hidden option or a fight against a secret character.

Practice Fatalities in slow motion

When the announcer calls for the finish, you have a few seconds to enter a Fatality from the right distance. Nagori helps:

  • Save states. Pause and choose Save while your opponent stands dazed. If the Fatality doesn’t come out, Load and try again.
  • Slow Motion runs the game at half speed, the computer included, so every input has twice the time. Assign it to a controller button in the pause menu, or add the ×0.5 button to My Layout. Once a Fatality, Brutality or combo works at half speed, try it at full speed.

Saves

Anything the game writes to a memory card goes to its own card in Nagori, written every few seconds. On top of that:

  • Quit any time. Leave mid-round and Continue puts you back in the same fight.
  • Save states. Save before each fight on the way to Shao Kahn at the top of the tower, and Load if you lose instead of starting the climb over. Nagori keeps your last four saves per game.

Best settings

  • Quality: Low shows the digitized fighters in their original, unfiltered pixels. High, the default, smooths them; its double resolution only applies to 3D, and these fighters are 2D sprites.
  • Screen Effects → CRT Screen adds scanlines, closer to the arcade cabinets the series started on.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play Mortal Kombat Trilogy on iPhone?

Yes. Add a disc image of your own copy of Mortal Kombat Trilogy to Nagori, a PS1 emulator from the App Store, and it plays on iPhone and iPad with touch controls or a controller.

Is Mortal Kombat Trilogy free on iPhone?

Nagori doesn't include or sell games, so you need your own copy. The app itself lets you add your first game for free.

Can two players play Mortal Kombat Trilogy on one iPhone?

Yes. Connect two Bluetooth controllers to fight one-on-one, team up for 2-on-2 battles or run a tournament. Both players can also enter Kombat Kodes on the VS screen, as on the console.

Why does my Mortal Kombat Trilogy disc image have so many files?

The disc stores the game's music as separate audio tracks, so a .cue + .bin image often has one .bin file per track. Select the .cue together with every .bin file, or add the .zip or .rar they came in. A .chd image keeps all the tracks in one file.

Is a controller better for Mortal Kombat Trilogy on iPhone?

Usually, yes. Fatalities and special moves are quick sequences of directions and buttons, and a physical D-pad gets them out reliably. Bluetooth controllers that iOS supports, including DualSense, DualShock 4 and Xbox controllers, work with Nagori. On touch, Slow Motion gives you time to learn the inputs.
