Capcom’s 1999 sequel brings back Jill Valentine for one last attempt to get out of Raccoon City as the zombie outbreak takes it over. Umbrella has sent something after the surviving members of S.T.A.R.S.: the Nemesis, a towering creature that hunts Jill through the streets and keeps coming back. If you own the game, Nagori lets you play it on iPhone and iPad.
What you need
- An iPhone or iPad with iOS 17.6 or later.
- Nagori from the App Store. Your first game is free.
- A disc image of your copy of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis:
.chd,.cue+.bin,.pbp,.isoor.img, or a.zipor.rarcontaining it. The game fits on a single disc.
No BIOS file is needed.
How to play Resident Evil 3 on iPhone
- Install Nagori from the App Store.
- Copy your Resident Evil 3 disc image to the Files app, in iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.
- Open Nagori, tap + and select the file. For a
.cueimage, select the.cuetogether with all of its.binfiles, or add the archive they came in. - Find Resident Evil 3 on the PS1 shelf with its box art and press Play.
Controls
Resident Evil 3 keeps the series’ tank controls: up walks forward, down steps back, and left and right turn on the spot. It adds two moves that matter with Nemesis on your heels:
- Quick turn. Hold down and press the run button, and Jill spins around to face the other way.
- Dodge. A button press timed just as an enemy attacks makes Jill dodge the blow.
Both depend on timing, so the buttons have to be where your thumbs expect them. The Standard touch layout has the D-pad, the face buttons and the shoulder buttons. Pause, open Edit Layout, and make the run and aim buttons bigger, or drag the aim button down from the top corner to where your right thumb rests.
The game also supports the DualShock’s analog stick. If you’d rather move Jill with a stick, pick DualShock or D-Pad + Stick under Settings → Touch Layout.
With a controller, every button sits where it did on the PlayStation pad. Press the left stick to open the pause menu.
Nemesis: fight or run
Nemesis appears at set points in the story, and unlike the zombies he can follow you through doors. Fighting him burns ammo you may need later. Running saves it but leaves him on your trail.
When he shows up, pause and choose Save. Then try standing your ground, and if the ammo runs out first, Load and run instead.
Live Selection: see both outcomes
At certain moments the action stops and the game gives you two choices and a few seconds to pick one. What you pick changes the scenes that follow. Nagori’s pause stops that countdown, so you can make a save state while the two options are on screen, see where one leads, then Load and try the other.
Saves: keep the ink ribbons for later
On the PlayStation, you can only save at a typewriter, and each save uses up an ink ribbon. Nagori keeps that system and adds its own:
- Typewriter saves work as before. They go to the game’s own memory card, as on the console.
- Save states. Pause and choose Save anywhere, with no typewriter and no ribbon. Nagori keeps your last four saves per game.
- Quit any time. Leave in the middle of a street and Continue puts you back exactly where you were.
Best settings
- Quality: High, the default, renders Jill, Nemesis and the zombies at twice the original resolution. The streets and rooms are pre-rendered pictures, so they keep their original detail.
- Quality: Low keeps everything at the original resolution, if you’d rather the sharp characters didn’t stand out against the backgrounds.
- Precise Geometry, in Advanced Settings, steadies the slight wobble of PS1 polygons on the characters.
- Screen Effects → CRT Screen adds scanlines that soften the picture, as a 1990s TV did.
