SingleTrac’s Twisted Metal 2 came to the PlayStation in 1996, published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Calypso’s contest goes on a world tour this time, through Los Angeles, Moscow, Paris, Amazonia, New York, Antarctica, Holland and Hong Kong, and the last driver left alive gets one wish. The roster includes Mr. Grimm on a motorcycle and Axel, strapped between two giant wheels, with Sweet Tooth’s ice cream truck among the hidden drivers. If you own the game, Nagori lets you play it on iPhone and iPad.

Controls
Twisted Metal 2 came out before the PlayStation had analog sticks, so you drive with the D-pad, and the Standard touch layout has everything the game needs. The rest of the pad stays busy: speeding up, braking, firing your machine guns and picking and launching special weapons all happen in the middle of a fight.
The D-pad does more than steer. Short combinations of directions trigger special moves, such as freezing an opponent in place for a moment, and they only come out if every direction lands. If they fail on touch, open Edit Layout in the pause menu and make the D-pad bigger, so your thumb can roll from one direction to the next without slipping off.
Combos are easiest on a controller’s D-pad. With a controller, every button sits where it did on the PlayStation pad, and the left stick works as the D-pad too. Press the left stick to open the pause menu.
Two players
Twisted Metal 2 has two split-screen modes for two players: a head-to-head duel, and a cooperative tournament in which you and a friend take on the other drivers together. Nagori supports two controllers, so both modes work on one iPhone or iPad. Connect both controllers before you pick a mode. The touch controls hide while a controller is connected, so each player needs one.
Saves
Nagori gives each game its own memory card, written every few seconds, so anything Twisted Metal 2 saves to its card is there next time. On top of that:
- Quit any time. Leave in the middle of a fight and Continue puts you back in the same arena.
- Save states. On the way to Calypso, the tournament puts you up against two bosses, Minion and Dark Tooth. Pause and choose Save when a boss fight starts. If you lose, Load and try again. Nagori keeps your last four saves per game.
Best settings
- Quality: High, the default, renders the cars and cities at twice the original resolution.
- Quality: Low keeps the original resolution with sharp, unfiltered pixels, if you want the game exactly as it looked in 1996.
- Precise Geometry, in Advanced Settings, steadies the slight wobble of PS1 polygons on the streets and buildings.
- Screen Effects → CRT Screen adds scanlines if you want the game to look like it did on a 1990s TV.
European copies, sold as Twisted Metal World Tour, run at 50 Hz in Nagori, just as they did on the console. American copies run at 60 Hz.
